Why DIY

Tiling isn't magic.

It's a sequence of steps. Know the rules behind each one and you can get a pro-level result.

Keep the labor bill

Labor is often the biggest cost of a tile job. With Basic, you do the work – and keep that money.

Done right, not just done

Flatness, mortar coverage, waterproofing, movement joints – the rules that make tile last.

On your schedule

No waiting weeks for a contractor. Work weekends, at your pace.

Buy the right stuff

The calculator tells you how many bags, gallons and tubes – no second trip to the store.

02

Measure & calculate

Enter your sizes, get your shopping list in sq ft, bags and gallons.

03

Five substrate checks – flat within 1/4 in over 10 ft, solid, clean, dry, no cracks.

04

Tile it yourself

Waterproof, set, grout, caulk – one checklist at a time.

Material calculator

Your materials – down to the bag.

Pick bathroom, floor, wall or shower, enter the size, choose your tile. Done.

  • Tile with the right overage for your pattern
  • Thinset in 50-lb bags plus the right trowel
  • Waterproofing in gallons, backer board in sheets
  • Grout and caulk – copy the list or text it to yourself

Estimates – manufacturer data sheets always take precedence.

Substrate check

Most tile failures start underneath.

Before the first tile goes down, your floor or wall has to pass five checks.

01

Solid

No bounce, no loose subfloor.

02

Flat

1/4 in over 10 ft – 1/8 in for large tile.

03

Clean

No sealer, paint, adhesive or dust.

04

Dry

Concrete cured, no leaks.

05

Crack-free

Or treated with a crack isolation membrane.

Drywall in the shower? Not behind tile. Use cement board, foam board or a complete system.
Single layer of plywood?Needs an uncoupling membrane or backer board before tile.
House built before 1980?Old vinyl tiles and black mastic may contain asbestos – test before you scrape.

FAQ

Questions & answers.

What exactly do I get with Basic?
Online access to the step-by-step guide (12 chapters) and the material calculator, both adapted to US rules and units. English versions of the 3D bathroom planner and AI assistant will be added for Basic customers at no extra cost.
Is it a subscription? How do I get in after buying?
No subscription – you pay once. After checkout you create your customer account and land directly in the guide. Log in anytime via "Customer login".
Is the content really adapted to the US?
Yes. Units are inches, feet, pounds and gallons, and the guide follows the TCNA Handbook, ANSI A108/A118 and the IRC – for example 6 ft minimum shower wall height, cement board instead of drywall in showers and 1/4 in per foot shower floor slope. Local codes can differ, so always check with your building department.
Why is the price in euros?
FliesenCoach is run by a tile business in Germany, so checkout is in euros. Your card issuer converts it; €39 is roughly $44 depending on the exchange rate and your bank's fees.
Will you check my work or come to my house?
Basic is self-guided. It doesn't replace an inspection, and the work stays your responsibility. On-site help is currently only offered in Germany.
What should I not do myself?
Electrical, gas, moving plumbing, structural changes and asbestos or lead removal belong to licensed professionals. The guide tells you where those lines are.

FliesenCoach provides general, practical guidance – not legal or engineering advice. You carry out the work at your own responsibility; follow manufacturer instructions and local building codes.
